Long have I been somewhat sceptical of treatments such as physiotherapy for little injuries or little pains. I kind of thought physiotherapy is for the more serious injuries, or for professional sports people. Whenever I’ve had a muscular pain or something, I’ve often thought “it’ll go away if I rest”, and generally it has after a few weeks. I often through that if I was to go to a physio, they’d have simply told me what was wrong and to rest until it heals. I guess I’ve always thought the injury would be down to bruising, and just needs to be left alone to heal.
Well, a week or two ago (when I started writing this, I would’ve said yesterday), I got a really painful back ache. And Although a very wise young lady told me I should go to the physio, I refused. Instead I bought some painkillers and attempted to heal through my traditional method of...rest. This time wasn't looking good, and it went from bad to worse, and the painkillers weren’t exactly working any longer either. So I decided to bite the bullet and go to the physio. It would be my first ever visit.
The physio asked me a few questions, like “do you work in an office,” “how to do sit at work,” “what physical activities do you do,” “where’s the pain” and all sorts, and then said, “I’m pretty sure I know what it is but we’ll just confirm with some movements and such.” After he'd confirmed his suspicions, which was that I had strained a costo-vertebral joint, which is the small articulation between a rib and my spine; around this was a muscle spasm. He then proceeded to massage my back, prodding and cracking and all sorts. After 45 mins I was done, and the pain was totally gone. This pain that was too painful for painkillers to mask, was now gone! I couldn’t believe it.
The next day there was some stiffness left and it was a little sore, but generally the majority of pain was gone, and I could wean myself off the painkillers. In no more than 3 days I was back on my bike! And damn had I missed riding?! It felt so good to be back out there and feeling good. The pain had totally gone within 4-5 days.
Basically, I would highly recommend going to a physiotherapist if you have any muscle problems, or any pains that you probably think are down to pulled or torn muscles, knots, or anything else that isn’t a cut or break. You’ll be so thankful when they work their magic and you leave feeling 100x better!
I went to Pure Physio in Melbourne, and they were great!
